Pixel Art Animation Tutorial: Walk Cycles, Attacks, and Character Sprites
Pixel Art Animation: The Complete Tutorial
The 6 Key Animations Every Game Needs
1. Idle Animation (2-4 frames)
- Subtle breathing motion (1-2 pixel up/down)
- Optional: blink, hair movement, tail wag
- Loop speed: 4-8 FPS
2. Walk Cycle (4-6 frames)
The most important animation in any game:
Frame 1: Contact (right foot forward)
Frame 2: Passing (weight centered, slight bob UP)
Frame 3: Contact (left foot forward)
Frame 4: Passing (weight centered, slight bob UP)
Key principles:
- Head bobs UP during pass position (not down!)
- Arms swing opposite to legs
- 1-2 pixel vertical bounce
- Hair/cloth follows with delay (secondary motion)
3. Run Cycle (6-8 frames)
- More extreme poses than walk
- Both feet off ground in "flight" frame
- Bigger vertical bounce (2-3 pixels)
- Lean forward slightly
4. Attack Animation (3-5 frames)
Frame 1: Anticipation (wind up — SLOW)
Frame 2: Action (swing — FAST, 1-2 frames)
Frame 3: Impact (freeze frame + screen shake)
Frame 4-5: Recovery (return to idle)
Secret: The anticipation makes the attack feel powerful. Hold frame 1 longer.
5. Jump (3 frames)
- Crouch (anticipation)
- Airborne (stretched pose)
- Land (squash on impact)
6. Death (4-6 frames)
- Hit reaction
- Fall
- Ground impact
- Optional: fade out / dissolve
Animation Timing Cheat Sheet
Sub-Pixel Animation
Move elements by fractions of a pixel using color blending:
- Instead of moving 1 pixel, blend between positions
- Creates smoother motion at low resolutions
- Used in Celeste, Shovel Knight
Squash and Stretch in Pixel Art
Even at 16×16, you can apply Disney's principles:
- Landing: Character 1px wider, 1px shorter
- Jumping: Character 1px taller, 1px narrower
- Impact: Weapon stretches 1-2px
